Few names in Australian ceramics carry the legacy and creative depth of Robert Gordon. With roots tracing back over 75 years, the family-run brand has grown from a humble pottery studio into a renowned name in both local and international design. But beyond the history lies a story of constant evolution—of staying true to handmade craftsmanship while pushing the boundaries of form and style.

We sat down with Bobby Gordon, one of the current leaders of the business, to talk about the brand’s design journey, the role of craftsmanship in their process, and where Robert Gordon is heading next.

Robert Gordon has such a rich history. Can you share a little about how the brand started and what it means to continue that family legacy today?

My grandparents started the business over 75 years ago—pottery has always been in our blood. Continuing that legacy means everything. It’s about honouring their craft while evolving with the times and doing it together as a family makes it even more meaningful.

How would you describe the evolution of the design style over the years?

We’ve moved from more traditional, decorative pieces to a focus on timeless, functional design. Today, there’s a real emphasis on texture, form, and earthy tones that feel at home in Australian interiors.

What design values or principles have remained constant throughout that evolution?

Quality, authenticity, and a deep respect for the handmade process. Those things have never changed.

Are there any design directions or creative inspirations you're exploring right now?

We’re really inspired by architecture —form, structure, and natural materials. There’s a lot of crossover between ceramics and built spaces, and it’s exciting to explore that.

Can you talk about the importance of craftsmanship in Robert Gordon’s ceramics? How do your artisans contribute to maintaining the quality of each piece?

Craftsmanship is at the heart of everything we do. Our team has decades of experience, and their hands touch every piece. That human element is what gives our ceramics their soul.

What do you think makes Robert Gordon pottery so special, even as design preferences and trends continue to evolve?

I think it’s the combination of heritage and honesty. People can feel the care and integrity in each piece—it’s not about chasing trends but creating work that lasts.

Looking ahead, are there any exciting projects or new collections that Robert Gordon is working on?

We’re really proud to be working with Architect John Wardell and chef Hugh Allen on a custom tile range for his new restaurant Yiaga—it’s been an amazing creative collaboration. We have enjoyed working closely with leading architects like Kennedy Nolan on a beautiful interior project-Melbourne Place. It’s great to see ceramics playing a bigger role in design. There are a few more exciting things in the works, and we can’t wait to share more soon.
